Dear Casa de los Pobres Family,
Routine items can make an extraordinary difference in the lives of the children the Casa de Los Pobres helps in Tijuana.
The Casa once more is asking for donations of school supplies to prepare children to attend school. Many impoverished parents simply do not have the funds to buy them, making it tough on the kids as they begin a new academic year.
The Franciscan Sisters who run the Casa are asking for donation of the following items:
- Backpacks (new)
- Spiral notebooks (wide ruled)
- Composition notebooks
- Notebook filler paper
- Colored construction paper packs
- 3-ring binders
- Loose-leaf paper
- Blank paper
- Writing utensils: Pencils (sharpened with erasers), pencil bags, pens, erasers, washable markers, highlighters, colored pencils, crayons
- School scissors
- Glue sticks
- Rulers
- Insulated lunch boxes
- Reusable water bottles
DROP-OFF LOCATION STARTING AUGUST 24
Our Lady of Refugee Parish 4226 Jewell Street (corner of Jewell St. and Oliver Ave.), San Diego, 92109 (enter parking lot on Oliver Street).
Donation Times: Sundays 8:00AM – 2:00PM and Mondays 8:30AM – 3:00PM; Marissa in the office will open the hall for donations (starting Monday, August 24).
Maybe you’re already buying supplies for your own family? Why not scoop up some extras and donate them?
Education is the gateway out of poverty. Your donation of supplies or funds (see below) can help needy children be ready for school.
Kids Need Shoes Too!
The Sisters plan to give 500 needy children a pair of shoes to begin the school year, half each for boys and girls, of varying sizes.
Sister Armida Andrade, who leads the Casa, says some families travel to their site from far-flung neighborhoods hoping to get a pair for their children.
This year, the cost of the shoes has gone way up, and the Sisters are struggling to pay for all of them. A donation of $25 would cover the cost of one pair of sturdy leather shoes.
Please donate today to enable the Casa to help children start the new academic year on good footing – literally!
The Casa is Making a Difference!
Every family the Casa helps is a story of resilience, determination and love. Sister Armida shared one such story recently.
It’s about twin girls who were born ill. As they grew, they faced developmental delays and vision problems.
The Casa helped their single mother, who is very poor, in a variety of ways over the years. She sought out healthcare for her daughters and made sure they went to school, with the Casa’s assistance.
“The mother recently gave us the big news. The twins graduated from high school!” said Sister Armida, who added that the mom shared their diplomas.
Your donations to the Casa make this success possible, one family at a time.
